Fit, finish, and tweaksĪt this point, I did decide on a couple of tweaks to the original layout. We opted to paint them ourselves in order to save money and also to make sure the shade of white matched our trim. The doors were about 50 percent more expensive than the ones from IKEA, but they’re solid wood rather than particleboard. Working with Scherrs was great, and I highly recommend them. I chose to order paint-ready poplar doors from Scherrs, a custom cabinetry shop based in North Dakota. This is where IKEA’s somewhat-infuriating, hyper-modular system comes in handy: I could order the cabinets and drawer hardware from IKEA but get the doors elsewhere. I have assembled dozens, if not hundreds, of pieces of Ikea furniture over the last 30 years. Our demolished kitchen, all laid out Custom doors for IKEA cabinets Up until this point I’d been a little wary about the island, but once we taped it out I decided to go for it. This plus the fact that the SEKTION system is totally new, and therefore there aren’t pre-made SketchUp 3D models available, led me to the decision to hire a professional IKEA designer. I read articles about the work triangle and tons of forum threads with benefits and drawbacks of various options, but ultimately I felt completely overwhelmed.
